The American Express Blue Business® Plus is a no fuss, no annual fee card catered towards the small business owner that wants to earn travel rewards and points through everyday purchases. This card is a part of the American Express Membership Rewards points ecosystem, earning two MR points per dollar spent on the first $50,000 spent in a calendar year, it has a slot in every Amex power user’s wallet due to it’s place in the coveted American Express Trifecta.

This card was the first small business card that Redux got approved for and it’s benefits have gone to great use. The free employee cards make adding key crew members easy for my company’s film productions and you don’t have to explain any complicated category optimization strategies to your employees. The 0% Intro APR allowed me to purchase a drone and pay it off over several months, with work that I would otherwise not have gotten without it.

Reasons to get The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express

No Hassle Rewards Earning

No quarterly rotation, no categories, a straightforward 2X Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 spent on the account in a year, then it drops down to 1X MR on everything. For a small business owner worrying about enough things at any given time with your small business, it’s nice to have a card that you don’t have to worry about if you are getting the best value at each merchant you use it with.

0% Intro APR for 12 Months

Many small businesses have startup costs without an immediate cash flow, and American Express has taken that into consideration in developing this card. With a 0% APR for the first year of this card you get time to get your cash flowing without having to worry about compounding interest. Or in my case I bought some big ticket film production equipment and gave myself several months to pay it off from new jobs I was able to bid on because of the new equipment. Just make sure that you meet each monthly minimum payment and pay the card off in full by the end of the 12 months because then at that point you will start racking up the interest fees.

Expanded Buying Power

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express offers a unique feature that allows you to temporarily spend above your preset credit limit. When I was approved for the card with a $3,000 limit I had expanded buying power of up to $4,000 on the first day and they claim that will increase or decrease based on credit worthiness. If you do utilize this feature keep in mind that the amount you go over your credit limit will added to your due minimum payments at the end of the month, so if I ended up using $4,000 of my expanded buying, the amount due at the end of the month would be the minimum payment plus the $1,000 I went over my credit limit.

Employee Cards at No Cost

For a developing small business you will likely be delegating purchases to others so you can focus on managing the business, which means that you will need employee cards. The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express offers up to 99 additional employee cards at no cost, along with business expense tracking software that helps you stay on top of each employee’s purchases.

Reasons to pass on The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express

Your annual expenses far exceed the $50,000 cap

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express comes with a generous 2x MR on the first $50,000 spent in a calendar year, and after that it drops to 1x MR per dollar spent. For starting a small business this card is perfect, but once you hit $50,000 spent in a year I would recommend looking at getting another card based on your most highest spent categories to optimize your rewards.

No Sign Up Bonus Offer

Unlike many of Chase’s Small Business Ink cards and a few other small business cards, the American Express Blue Business® Plus does not offer a regular sign up bonus. If you hunt for referral code offers you can occasionally find offers such as 15,000 MR points after $5,000 spent in the first 3 months. If you know your small business is expecting several large purchases in the first 3 months of opening I would recommend Chases’s Ink Business Unlimited Card, which boasts a $500 cash back bonus after you spend $3,000 in the first 3 months.

Reduced Cashback Redemption

For the small business owner who prefers cash back statement credit redemption over Membership Rewards points then this card will only offer a value of 1.2% cashback, so you would be better suited to a cash back redemption card like the Blue Business Cash Card from American Express for 2% cashback on the same $50,000 cap as the Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express.

Foreign Transaction Fee

While the travel redemption for this card is excellent, the 2.7% foreign transaction fee makes this card bad for international travel. If you travel a lot for business I would recommend looking at adding another business card if your business takes you internationally often.

Is The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express right for you?

If you want a one card solution for your business this is right for you. It comes with no annual fee, up to 99 additional employee cards at no charge, and a simplistic rewards scheme that is a great Amex MR earning card for everyday expenses that are highly valued for travel rewards.

If you want to maximize your signup bonus, get cashback, or a category based card, then I would recommend the Chase Ink Business Unlimited credit card for 1.5% cashback on everything or the Chase Ink Business Cash credit card for category rewards with 5% on office supplies, phone or internet bills, 2% on gas and restaurants with 1% back on everything else.
